A flag of mourning was hoisted at the holy shrine of Imam Ali (AS) in Najaf, Iraq, to mark the demise anniversary of the last messenger of God, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hassan Mujtaba (PBUH).

Hawzah News Agency- A ceremony was held to raise the flag at the mausoleum.

It was attended by religious, political and social officials, seminary scholar and students, university figures and a large number of pilgrims.

Ahemd al-Qureishi, an official with the Astan (custodianship) of Imam Ali (AS) holy shrine, addressed the ceremony, offering condolences on the sad occasion and talking about different aspects of the demise of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

Earlier Najaf authorities said that with a large number of pilgrims expected to visit the holy shrine these days, military and security forces have stepped up measures to ensure security.

The 28th day of the lunar Hijri month of Safar, which falls on Monday, September 2, marks the demise anniversary of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hassan (PBUH).

The 30th day of the lunar month, September 4 this year, is marked as the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Reza (PBUH), the eighth Shia Imam.

The Astan said it will host more than 600 groups of mourners on the 28th day of Safar.

There will be special mourning rituals and program on the sad occasion of demise anniversary of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hassan (PBUH) at the holy shrine, the Astan noted.
